Caffeine is a performance enhancing drug used to improve intellectual output. In beverages such as tea and coffee, caffeine stimulates mental activity when it falls below normal levels. Under the influence of caffeine, thought becomes more rapid, fatigue disappears and its onset is delayed.

Caffeine is also an addictive substance and withdrawal symptoms attributable to psychological and physical dependence occur in habitual coffee drinkers 12 to 16 hours after their last cup of caffeinated beverage. Withdrawal symptoms include headache, irritability, the jitters, poor concentration and an increase in absent mindedness.

There are few serious health implications relating to the widespread use of this true performance enhancing drug. A high intake of caffeine causes cancer in rats and raises cholesterol levels in men.

Home Remedies

Caffeine addicts who go cold turkey must expect withdrawal symptoms to last for at least a fortnight. Maintain the ritual of coffee or tea drinking through the substitution of decaffeinated coffee or tea for the formerly consumed hard core beverages. Decaffeinated coffee still manages to cause indigestion; but contains only 3-4 mg of caffeine which is much better than the 60-80 mg in a cup of coffee or the 30-50 mg of caffeine in a cup of tea. Some people worry about decaffeinated coffee because manufacturers remove the caffeine with trichloroethane. In theory this volatile organic solvent evaporates completely after the extraction of caffeine.

Remarriage can have positive or negative effects for the child. Sometimes it restores a stable, two-parent environment with all its attendant benefits, especially a sense of normality. It also brings with it new stresses and problems. Some children feel a sense of disloyalty if they allow themselves to develop a close relationship with a new step-parent. There is often jealousy as new relationships are established between adults and children — children and parents (both biological and step-parents) can all feel awkward and ambivalent about this. Issues raised by differing parenting styles are inevitable, and expectations and established routines alter. Sometimes privacy and boundaries are issues, especially for older children and adolescents. If there are children of similar ages in both families, competition may cause tensions in the household.

There are no easy answers to the many potential difficulties, some major and others apparently trivial but nonetheless important, that accompany the blending of two families. A sense of humour helps, along with a commitment to respect individual needs and styles of doing things. Sometimes family therapy may help to clarify issues and suggest strategies for resolving problems.
If the skin doesn’t blister, don’t cover the burns. A soothing cream or an antiseptic may be applied. Should the skin blister, cover the burn with a clean dressing. Change this frequently.

NEVER use CREAMS or OINTMENTS where the skin is blistered. They stick and delay the healing process. If the doctor has to remove the dressing, he will also have to remove cream and ointment to get to the burn, and that is painful.

Large blisters need de-capping and proper dressing. Never just prick the blister; this lets out the fluid but lets in the germs.

MAJOR: Again, cold is the best treatment. Apply cold water immediately. Cover the area with a wet, clean sheet. The water which evaporates from this sheet keeps the part underneath cool, lessens fluid loss and prevents further tissue damage. Shock always accompanies burns to large areas of the body.

Pigment stones make up the bulk of gallstones in some communities, such as Korean and Japanese country dwellers, but 80 per cent of stones are the mixed type and contain both cholesterol and pigment as well as calcium salts.

Not all gallstones lead to symptoms. Some are found at autopsies or operations without the owners ever being troubled by them.

This is more likely with a solitary cholesterol stone. The commonest symptom is a flatulent dyspepsia. The person has a fullness after food, frequent belching and heart-burn. These symptoms are more common following a fatty meal.

But don’t think that every woman with a fine moustache is about to develop muscles and a deep voice. For most women, an excess of hair is the only sign of the effect of these androgens and they are otherwise fully feminine.

The overactivity of the male hormones may come from disorders of the ovaries or the adrenal glands, where there will usually be other signs and symptoms.

Use a small wooden barrel, or a large earthenware pot. Possibly a large stainless steel pail or a glass jar could be used, but under no circumstances use an aluminum utensil.

Cut white cabbage heads into narrow strips with a large knife or grater, and place in a barrel. When the layer of cabbage is about four to six inches deep, sprinkle a few juniper berries, cummin seeds and/or black currant leaves on top—use your favorite or whatever you have available. A few strips of carrots, green peppers, and onions can also be used. Add a little sea salt—not more than two ounces for each 25 pounds of cabbage. Then add another layer of grated cabbage and spices until the container is filled. Each layer should be pressed and stamped very hard with your fists or a piece of wood so that there will be no air left and the cabbage will be saturated with its own juice.

When the container is full, cover cabbage with a clean linen canvas, place a wooden or slate board over it, and on the top place a clean heavy stone. Let stand for three to four weeks in a warm place, not below 70° F. Now and then remove the foam and the possible mildew from the .top, from the stone and from the barrel edges. The linen canvas, board and stone should be occasionally removed, washed well with warm and then cold water, and replaced. After three to four weeks the sauerkraut is ready for eating. It can be left in the barrel, which now should be stored in a cool place, or put in glass jars and kept in the refrigerator.

Sauerkraut is best eaten raw—both from the point of taste and for its health-giving value. Drink sauerkraut juice, too. It is an extremely beneficial and wonderfully nutritious drink.

In addition to the positive factors named above for the prevention of baldness and for the stimulation of hair growth, here are some negative ones. Avoid the following: salt; white sugar and white flour; excessive amounts of animal fats; alcohol and smoking; prolonged emotional stress.

Experiments conducted in Sweden indicate that cutting down salt in the diet will significantly reduce hair loss. The American scientist, Dr. Eugene Foldes, of New York, has in his experiments arrived at similar conclusions.

White sugar and white flour and all foods or beverages made with them are not only worthless from a nutritional point of view, but they are definitely health destroyers. Prom the originally good natural products, sugar beets, sugar cane and whole wheat, virtually all the nutritive elements have been removed. What remains is nothing but pure starch, which you certainly don’t need to grow hair. What is even worse, sugar and white flour destroy B-vitamins in your system—the very vitamins that you have learned a few pages back are so vital for the healthy condition of your hair.

Alcohol is pure carbohydrate and also destroys B vitamins in your body.

Tobacco constricts blood capillaries and robs your system of vitamin C: both important factors connected with hair loss. It has been proven by extensive research performed by Dr. J. H. Burn, of Oxford, that smoking constricts the arteries and small capillaries, and slows down blood circulation.

Excessive amounts of animal fats and refined carbohydrates in the diet can adversely affect the normal functioning of the sebaceous glands, as has been found by the famed dermatologist Dr. Lubowe. Replace animal fats and hydrogenated fats in your diet with cold-pressed unsaturated vegetable oils, such as corn oil, safflower oil, wheat germ oil, olive oil, etc., all also rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin E.

Avoid prolonged emotional and mental stress. Emotional stress causes constriction of the blood vessels of the scalp and tensions in the muscle tissues. This will block the narrow blood capillaries of the scalp and prevent blood from coming to the roots of the hair.

2. Emphysema (dilation of the lung): the lung area is dark and shows commencing lacunae (weakness-signs) extending outwards beyond the usual limits.

Every darkening in the lung areas is an expression of defective oxygen exchange, be it following acute emphysema, stasis from cardiac conditions, or merely reflective of poor breathing habits.

3. Pertussis (whooping cough): as with coughs from chill, whooping cough shows the usual white flakes or clouds in the appropriate areas during the early stages. In the convulsive stage it is evidenced by nerve rings which interrupt in the lung areas. After badly resolved whooping cough there remains a definite lung weakness, which shows as one or more large areas of darkening in the right iris at 40-47′. These dark signs greatly resemble the lacunae

(weakness-signs). If several of these signs are found in the lung and pleural areas (right 40 ‘-47′), together with others occurring simultaneously in the lower nasal quadrant (right 15′-20′), then there is a hereditary disposition to asthma.

If these signs are also found in the left iris, together with cardiac weakness-signs, then the patient suffers from cardiac and pulmonary asthma.

4. Pulmonary tuberculosis: tuberculosis of the lung is hardly to be recognised on the basis of the lung signs alone. It is necessary here to search for other signs, especially in the intestinal zone, kidney area, and in the mucous membrane zone of the lung fields. In the intestinal zone, lying close to the iris-wreath, the so-called ‘Schnabel-lacunae’ may be found—these can also lie outside the iris-wreath. Important signs confirming the suspected lung T.B. are stasis signs in the left kidney area. (With dark kidney area, also look for the ‘kidney-nail’= high arched finger nail.)

Further signs which give support to the diagnosis of lung T.B. are yellowish-white deposits in the mucous membrane zone of the lung areas. These can also appear in the form of small white clouds. A further sign is a very dark to black skin zone in this area. The deposit or clouds do not lie distributed in the manner typical of acute chill signs in the mucous membrane zone (arranged in arc form), but lie vertically one under the other in a straight line. In definite cases of lung T.B. the iris fibres in the lung area have the appearance of ‘combed hair’ (Maubach, Angerer).

Cavities are very difficult to recognise—as dark signs which are round at the bottom and flattened at the top, like a vertical section through a cup. In the dark grey sign lies a blacker point.

5. Pulmonary carcinoma: the signs for these conditions are very difficult to diagnose—especially for beginners. The signs are dark signs which extend in the width, and are not like the

weakness-signs which are oval in length, since these signs become more oval in breadth. The dark sign seems to project forward from the depths of the iris. There is always a toxin-fleck nearby.

6. Dry pleurisy: shows fine white lines in the pleural area which extend outwards to the skin zone.

7. Pleurisy with effusion: is suggested by an inward deviation of the skin zone as a dark arc formation at left iris 15′-17′ or right iris 43′-45′.

If simultaneously one finds light inflammation lines and small black signs in the back

areas—left iris 43′, right iris 17′—then the danger of suppuration is indicated.

If the inflammation signs are prominent in profile, then a protracted condition is indicated, especially when the signs are to be seen in the left iris at 40′-45′ nasal segment. When with conditions of this kind the signs are apparent in profile, then the possibility of T.B. must always be considered.

8. Pleural suppuration: usually appears after acute pleurisy, but, can also arise without evident cause. It shows as fine cobweb signs (trans-versales).

Blood circulates throughout the body, so the contents of the blood can provide information both about general health and about specific diseases. The blood to be tested is drawn out of a vein with a syringe, or taken by pricking a finger. The method used to take a sample or specimen depends on how much blood is needed for the tests that are to be done, and also how “clean” the specimen needs to be. A finger-stick sample is more likely to be contaminated by contact with the surface of the finger than is a sample taken by putting a sterile needle into a vein.

Many different tests can be done on the blood, and a few of the most common ones are described here. (More complex tests can be done to find out what chemicals are present in the blood.)

Haematocrit. This test is done to find out how much of the blood is made up of red blood cells, which carry oxygen to the body tissues. The blood sample is spun in a machine called a centrifuge, which makes it separate into red blood cells, white blood cells, and plasma. The red cells are the heaviest, so they sink to the bottom. The percentage of red cells is then determined and compared to the normal range.

Hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein that gives red blood cells their red color; it also combines with oxygen so that the oxygen can be carried in the blood. A hemoglobin test is often done at the same time as a haematocrit. The amount of hemoglobin in the blood is tested by adding certain chemicals to the blood and then measuring the intensity of the red color that signifies hemoglobin.

These two tests are done to check for anaemia, red blood cell deficiency.

White blood cell count. White blood cells are part of the body’s defense against infection. Too many or too few of these cells in the blood may indicate an infection or a blood disorder. To count the white blood cells, a blood specimen is diluted and put in a counting chamber, which is a slide with a grid on it. The slide is examined under a microscope and the cells are counted. This test can be done in most doctors’ surgeries.

Differential blood count. There are five different types of white blood cells; each type has a distinctive shape and appearance, and each one has a different function. To get more precise information about a disease, the doctor may need to know how many of each type of white blood cells are present in the blood. To do this, a stain is added to a blood specimen; because the stain affects each type of white blood cell differently, it is then easier to tell them apart. The stained specimen is examined under a microscope, and at least 100 white blood cells are identified and classified. The cells are also examined to see if they are a normal shape. In the course of this test the red blood cells can also be counted and checked for abnormalities.

Sedimentation rate. Sedimentation rate means the speed at which red blood cells move through the blood and settle in the bottom of a container. A rapid sedimentation rate is a sign of disease. To test the rate of settling, a chemical is added to a blood sample to keep it from clotting. Then the red cells are timed as they slowly move to the bottom of a specially marked test tube. This test is used to screen for diseases, but it does not identify exactly what is causing the cells to fall more quickly than normal. Keeping track of the sedimentation rate in successive tests can help a physician follow the progress of diseases that cause inflammation, including rheumatic fever and rheumatoid arthritis.
