In this game, he surprises his wife one night by dispensing with his usual woe-is-me demeanor and adopting her own caretaker mode. To signal this change, he has donned a white-— bow tie, which he wears along with his pajamas. He slides into bed with her, smiling cheerfully, and asks, “So how are you tonight?”
“I’m okay. Why?” She does not at first look away from the television show she is watching.
“I just wondered. May I get you some juice?”
“No, thank you. What’s gotten into you?” She finally glances at him, and her eyes rest first on his cheerful smile, and then on the bow tie.
“What’s that?”
“It’s a tie.”
“How’s your head tonight?” he demurs. “I have a slight headache, as usual.” “Would you care for a scalp massage?” “A scalp massage?” “That’s right.”
“I think I must be hearing things.”
“No, you’re not hearing things.”
“You’re just trying to soften me up so I’ll have sex.”
“I can understand your thinking that. Lie back. Relax.”
He proceeds to give her a long, tender scalp massage. He must really give her a good, caring one in order for this exercise to work. It can’t be a quick, perfunctory job.
