MIGRAINE: SELF-HELP

on March 11th, 2009 by admin

The cardinal rule in migraine is to know what your own trigger factors are, and to minimise them as much as possible. Careful attention to minimising stress, reducing your exposure to extremes of heat and cold, having regular meals, having regular and enough sleep, not letting yourself lie in at weekends, checking out your own food sensitivities, and meticulously avoiding those foods which cause you problems, will all serve to reduce the number of attacks you get.

If you’re one of the fifty per cent of migraine sufferers who haven’t yet consulted your doctor, then go; see what’s on offer. You may find your attacks are much more easily controlled on prescribed medicines than on the ones you can get over the counter.

When you do get an attack, treat it quickly, to nip it in the bud. Take your medicines as soon as possible, then find a quiet room in which to lie down and rest. Don’t try and fight the attack – the migraine will almost certainly win! There is a ninety per cent improvement rate in those who rest as soon as an attack begins.

Because speed in dealing with impending attacks is essential, make sure you have your medicines with you wherever you go – which may mean separate bottles at home, at work, and in the car or in your handbag.

You may find that it helps to apply ice-packs or a cold compress to your head or neck, or else have a cold shower. Some people find warmth is more appropriate. .

If your doctor is having difficulty finding the right cocktail of drugs for you, it may help him if you keep a migraine diary. These are available from your doctor, or from the national migraine societies. A migraine diary is structured so that you can easily take note of your migraine, any associated symptoms, as well as your medication, and this may help your doctor to work out additional trigger factors that you hadn’t noticed, or else establish whether a particular drug regime is slightly more helpful than a previous one.
